The Idea for Cragbridge Hall, The Inventor's Secret

by Chad Morris

Thanks everyone who wished Shelly a happy bday last week. Good times. Good times.

And on to something new: One of the most common questions I'm asked is where I got the idea for my story. So I vlogged about it. Check it out.

Next week, Shelly and I just might vlog again. This time, it may be a little about the sequel to The Inventor's Secret, and Shelly will tell you about Sky Jumpers, by Peggy Eddleman. We got an ARC and Shelly shot through it in a few days.

While you're there she reviewed A.G. Howard's Splintered. I'm very excited to read this book as I have heard great things about this Alice in Wonderland twist. Now to create more time in the day so I can...

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner! AND it might be YOU!

I bet they WISH they won a chicken dinner! But alas we are not giving away food.

Our TWO winners are
Sheila and Kevin!
a Rafflecopter giveaway

Are you like totally bummed that you didn't get a chance to read Cragbridge Hall before your precocious nephew?

Well Chad has the heart of a million fire demons (that was a Howl's reference that was probably lost on most people so just chalk it up to Shelly is crazy) and he feels bad that he doesn't have enough ARCs to share.
BUT he does have one spare ARC to share.
And he wants to share it with YOU!

So here's what he's thinking.
A floater ARC. One that floats around this great USofA (for shipping reasons) and visits as many homes and kids (and big kids) as possible.

If you want a chance to read the 'floater' ARC you need to agree to:

1. Have it for no more than 2 weeks (it's about 300 pages of Middle Grade goodness)

2. Be willing to ship it Media Mail to the next person on the list (roughly $2-$3)

Sound like fun?

12 Steps to Publication

by Chad Morris

Monday is just around the corner and Monday is the day we are giving away two ARCs of Cragbridge Hall: The Inventor's Secret. The Rafflecopter entry form is at the bottom. Did you know that you don't have to give them your Facebook info. They will do it old school as well. Look for it the lettering is really small.

But first, I have to answer everyone who has asked about my road to publication. Okay, so no one asked, but if they did, here would be my 12 abbreviated steps in my journal to publication:

1) I was born. Cute, pudgy, bald. (And I plan to grow old that way.)

2) Somewhere in elementary I thought reading was kind of boring.

3) Somehow I started reading Lloyd Alexander and everything changed. I owe a lot to Gurgi.

4) I spent several years in rock bands. I was the drummer. Yes, I had a mullet. Yes, it was awesome. Yes, we were destined for greatness. . . in our own minds. Occasionally I would write some pretty vague, try-to-sound-poetic lyrics. No, you can't read them. But I was trying to write something.

5) At age 17 or 18, I wrote a comedy manuscript. I'm still looking for it. I know I have it somewhere. I was trying to become the next Dave Barry. I diligently sent it out to about 5 publishers, then forgot about it.

6) At age 18, I started writing a book called "Ocean's Rising." I don't even remember what it was about, other than a boy named Ocean. Pretty sure it was terrible.

7) I took a couple of creative writing classes in college.

8) I joined Divine Comedy, a sketch comedy troupe at BYU. I wrote and performed sketch with hilarious people who ended up being marketing professors, cartoon voices, New York Times Best-selling authors, and Lawyers with a fondness for teeny bop music and Bea Arthur. I learned a lot about writing. I got instant feedback; the audience either laughed or they didn't. I also gained a raptor impression and a couple wigs, but that really doesn't have much to do with writing.

9) I got married to a sexy hilarious woman, became a teacher, went back to school and didn't think about writing.

9) My good friend, Brandon Mull, got his break with Fablehaven. Something in me said, "If he can do it, maybe I can."

10) After I finished my Master's Degree I wanted to write something that didn't have a bibliography. I wrote a completely crazy book about a kid, an alien journal, supernatural glasses, and shape-shifters. Yeah, I probably should have stopped to actually outline that one. It got a bit crazy. It was good enough to get some attention, but not good enough to get a deal. Bonus: Shadow Mountain told me they would be interested in looking at whatever I wrote next.

11) I wrote a book crazy kids in a futuristic school who see history three-dimensionally around them (in orientation, a pirate ship sails through the front wall), run up virtual mountains in gym, and control avatars to learn about animals. I called it The Secret of Craggbridge Academy, which became, the Cragbridge Hall: The Inventor's Secret.

12) And Shadow Mountain offered me a contract.

And they gave me arcs.

And I want to give one to you. I really do.

Even if you've already entered, you can do it again. Because I like you!

LET'S GIVE AWAY SOME ARCS!

by Chad "excited to give stuff away" Morris

So, I got some ARC's of Cragbridge Hall: The Inventor's Secret over the weekend!

(I stacked those myself . . . and took the slighty fuzzy picture. It's all very artistic.)

If you missed it, here's the vid of me opening them up (But I didn't film the celebration dance).

(And if you haven't opened ARCs before, I highly recommend it. I'm sure your turn is just around the corner. Seriously.)

Here's the backcover copy:

Imagine a school in the year 2074 where students don't read history, but watch it happen around them; where running in gym class isn't around a track, but up a virtual mountain; and where learning about animals means becoming one through an avatar.

Welcome to Cragbridge Hall, the most advanced and prestigious school in the world. Twin siblings Abby and Derick Cragbridge are excited as new students to use their famed grandfather's inventions that make Cragbridge Hall so incredible. But when their grandfather and parents go missing, the twins begin following a trail of clues left by their grandfather. They must find out where their family is, learn who they can trust, and discover what secrets are hidden within Cragbridge Hall.

Abby and Derick soon realize they are caught in a race with a fierce adversary to discover  their grandfather's greatest secret--a dangerous discovery that could alter both history and reality.

Oh, and Brandon Mull read it and had this to say:

“Cragbridge Hall keeps the pages turning with inventive gadgets, mystery, humor, and danger.  Author Chad Morris offers a fantastical futuristic read that should engage kids and families.” –Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series

But I want YOU to read it. I want to give an ARC to you. I really do. I actually want to pass them out to everyone in the street like Scrooge when he dresses up like Santa Claus at the end of the Christmas Carol movie. (Even better, if we could do it like the Albert Finney musical version. Everyone would need to be really well choreographed though, because I'm not going to be able to carry that scene.) Unfortunately, I don't have that many (nor has Shelly approved any Santa suit purchases.)

There are two ways to win one. First, if there is a Deseret Book in your neighborhood, go on in and enter there. Just ask for an entry form and fill it on out. They are giving away 50! Yes, 50. If you don't live by a Deseret Book, have someone who does go in for you. Or move. But that might be a little too much.

Or . . . enter to when an ARC here! I'll give a couple away. So, to get your very own autographed ARC complete with swag (I don't actually have any swag, I just wanted to use that word. I could write "swag" on a piece of paper though. Or give you a picture one my kids drew of one of the inventions in my book--or a picture they drew of a monster that is completely unrelated to my book) enter the rafflecopter below (I love that name. "Everyone to the rafflecopter!" It makes me think of a helicopter that flings tickets with its blades. Awesome, and messy.) Tweet about the contest (either the Deseret Book contest or the blog contest, or both), share it facebook, or google+, have your kid draw a picture of an invention they made up, or build one out of Legos or cardboard or whatever (there are obviously tons of inventions in the book)- take a pic and post it. Use your garage for a billboard and paint about it, shave the title of my book into your dog (don't really do that), just spread the word. The more you do, the better your chances.

We'll let the rafflecopter pick out two winners ten days from now, announcing the winners on Monday Nov. 26 (US only . . . sorry). That is unless someone really makes me laugh, or really persuades me with one of your tweets, facebook posts, or a kid makes up a really cool invention . . . etc. Then I'll just give you one, and rafflecopter the other.

Alright, may the odds be . . . nevermind. Good luck!

THE COVER!!

by Chad Morris

So, just in case anyone hasn't been following my journey to getting published, here is the sum up: After writing a crazy manuscript that got publishers' attention, but wasn't good enough to seal the deal, I wrote another book. It's a crazy romp through a futuristic school. Last March, I got a call from Shadow Mountain Publishing saying they wanted to publish it! (They are the same people who published Fablehaven and Candy Shop Wars by Brandon Mull, 13th Reality by James Dasher, Far World by J. Scott Savage, and Janitors by Tyler Whitesides.) Yes, I was crazy excited. Yes, it felt surreal. And yes, I might have even done some weird celebration dance moves. No, you can't see them.

Anyway, it is coming out on March 5, 2013! Brandon Dorman did an absolute fantastic job on the cover, and I've just been given the go-ahead to show it to you. Here it is, in all it's unadulterated awesomeness:
