Hot Guys in Doublets: Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is like the heart of this video.
He is everywhere in it.

So why did it take me so long to make a Hot Guys in Doublets about him.
(Especially since he is TRULY wearing a doublet)

Because I think Henry the Eight is disgusting and I have trouble watching The Tudors.
There I said it.

I thought he was cute in Bend It Like Beckham

I thought he was really good looking in August Rush.
But no matter how nice that sweater looks on him it's not a doublet.

This is him in a doublet

And this is him in a doublet

And this is an open doublet
Not a bad look.

But such a bad guy.
Icky, icky Henry!

So when I found out he would be doing a 10 episode series with NBC called
I thought, "Welcome Mr. Meyers to HGID!"

It happens to be one of my favorite books

Unfortunately they don't seem to be following the book.

"On Tuesday, NBC announced the 10-episode series "Dracula," starring Rhys Meyers as the count, who travels to London in the 1890s. He poses as an American entrepreneur seeking to introduce modern technology to Victorian society, but in reality he's seeking revenge on the people who ruined his life centuries before. Of course, he falls for a girl who might or might not be the reincarnation of his lost love."

So, your thoughts on JRM?
(Does anyone call him that? Because they should!)

Hot Guys in Doublets: Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch?

Like the BBC's Sherlock Holmes?

He doesn't wear a doublet. (See below for proof)

and then that one time he wore that mock turtle neck with some sort of insignia
(who's excited for this movie to come out?)
NOT A DOUBLET

No doublet in that period film
(mustaches don't count as doublets)

And even in that period television series.
No doublet.
(That would be called a tuxedo.)

SO THEN, WHY?!?!

Because he's in the Sharp Dressed Man video.

What? No he's not!

YES, HE IS.
(0:13)

That's him with Ioan Gruffudd
(Who happened to be my first Hot Guys in Doublet HERE)
not in Horatio Hornblower like I thought at first
(I know, silly Shelly)
but in
AMAZING GRACE.

I loved that movie the first time I saw it
but neither Ioan or Benedict's names meant much to me back then.

Here they are in Amazing Grace

But Shelly, neither one of them are wearing a doublet
Well....
I cheat.
I count cravats.
Does anyone have a problem with that?

Plus, look at this wig and tights they made the man wear.

That's gotta get him on the list somewhere.
(Hee-hee-hee)

Here he is when they just makes his real hair look like a wig.

But he's still a good lookin' fella.

He's a talent actor and getting a lot of work right now.
He has four films coming out this year.
A whole batch.
You could say a
Cumber-Batch.

Yeah, yeah.
You knew I was silly when you started reading.

Hot Guys in Doublets: John Thornton

So I was told by MANY of you to watch North and South. I put it off forever because a friend of mine told me to read the book and I try to always read the book first.

Well, life was too busy for fitting in the Elizabeth Gaskell book so I went and picked up the film. I folded a lot of laundry while watching this story. Something I can't do with a book in hand.

The story was interesting.
The film was entertaining.

Poor John's heartache was palatable.

The part at the end when they FINALLY get together...EEeeehh. It was OK. (I'm sure there are people shouting at their computers right now. Sorry 'bout that.)

You can see John Thornton in the Sharp Dressed Man video. His mom is straightening his tie at 0:27 and you can see him again at 1:46.

John Thornton (aka Richard Armitage) is a handsome man. I mean look at those eyes.

and a talented actor.

Did you know that both Richard and, the last HGinD, J.J. Feild were both in Captain America. I'm starting to want to watch that film, more and more.

Richard is also going to be in The Hobbit. I will DEFINITELY be watching that film. Not just because Richard and Martin Freeman are in it but because I think that Jackson did a WONDERFUL job with The Lord of the Rings and I'm excited to see what he can do with The Hobbit. Honestly, The Hobbit isn't one of my favorite books (where as TLofTR is) but it should be a fun film.

Richard is playing Thorin Oakensheild, the leader of the dwarves. This should be interesting.

I think a segment called Hot Guys in Chainmail is worth looking into ;)

Hot Guys in Doublets: Mr. Tilney

I have been asked what movie is it where the guy wipes the dirt off the girl's cheek.

Answer: Northanger Abbey

One of my favorite Jane Austen books.
I love the innocence. I love the ghost story. I love the lost love and the found love.
I LOVE Northanger Abbey

I LOVE Mr. Tilney!

He's so sweet. He's so patient. He's so forgiving.
Don't we all need a man like that in our lives?

Oh, and did I mention that he understands fabric and the value of a good dress?

I love Darcy as much as the next lady but if I was being courted by both...Tilney, hands down.
And that is saying a lot.

Have you seen the 2007 Masterpiece Theater's Northanger Abbey? You should. They did a fabulous job. Funny fact: this is the second third film version of this book EVER made. A shame. I hope people make more.

Look what pavelchekov made: How cute is this?

Did you know that J.J. Feild (Mr. Tilney) is going to be playing the lead in Shannon Hale's Austenland? Yeah, I'm kind of excited about that movie.

(this picture is ACTUALLY from Austenland. It looks as if it was possibly taken without creative release- if it is not supposed to be circulated please let me know and I will remove it)

SO what have we learned?

We need to read Northanger Abbey.
We need to watch Northanger Abbey.
We need to stalk J.J. Feild.
We need to be watching for Austenland.

Class dismissed.

P.S.
YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I FOUND!
A blog called Hot Guys in Period Costumes. Wow, maybe all the good idea's ARE taken! :)
Anyways, great minds think alike.

Hot Guys in Doublets: Henry Crawford

I know that I'm not supposed to fall for the bad guys but Jane Austen gets me EVERYTIME! I love Whiloughby and Whickham for all their charming ways. But this last one caught me off guard (because his name doesn't start with a WH)

Henry Crawford from Mansfield Park

We know from the beginning that he's a bit of a cad but oh, how he tries to be good.
And oh, how he LOVES Fanny (even when it seems like nobody else does)
He could rescue her from poverty (purely because he wants to spend the rest of his life with her)
And she could rescue him from his selfish tendencies and his improprietious background.

I think one of the happiest engagements I've ever seen was in the 1999 film version* when Fanny accepted him after his countless kindnesses and then my heart broke for the guy when she called it off. In fact you can see how poor Henry took it in Sharp Dressed Man at 1:56. He's the guy with the flowers.
My heart breaks at the part of Sharp Dressed Man, each time.

Now with that being said, he doesn't end up being the best guy in the world (and we had enough foreshadowing to know that he wouldn't be) and like his WH friends, the ladies are better off without them.

Darn those charming bad guys. With these tendencies it's a good thing I married such a nice guy.

Did you know that there are people who chose sides in this book?
Are you Team Henry
or Team Edmund?

*in the book Fanny never accepts his proposal

Hot Guys in Doublets: Jonny Lee Miller

Shall we? I think we shall.

If they ever pull this video from YouTube these posts just aren't going to be the same.

Recognize this guy?

This, my friends, is Jonny Lee Miller.
The picture is from Mansfield Park (1999)
So is this one

And this one

Why do we love the silly character of Edmund?
He is riddled with faults.
He foolishly falls in love with the money grubbing Mary Crawford
He completely ignores the pining Fanny. (no jokes please)
He doesn't like theatrics and then against his better judgement joins in.
BUT
He is deeply devoted to his family.
He loves Fanny, really loves her.
He loves God and becoming a clergyman more than he loves Mary.
He sees his folly and repents of it
and if Fanny can forgive him, so can I.

Many of you probably know that this isn't the only place you can see Jonny Lee Miller in a doublet
(and in an Austen film for that matter)

He played the adorable Mr.Knightly in
the BBC's Emma (2009)

and another picture for good measure

Oh, and the scrumptious Lord Byron
in Byron (2003) (thanks Anna)

But did you know that Jonny Lee Miller was married to Angelina Jolie from ‘96-‘99?
I'm sure some of you are shaking your head and muttering "Where do you think we've been. Of course we know!"
Well for those of you who didn't...now, you do!

And we will part, until next time, with this picture.

Good-bye, Mr. Miller!
Next time I think we'll visit Mansfield Park again. Any guesses who it will be?

Hot Guy in Doublets: Mr.Churchill

And we're back
to the classic video, again.
Hurray!

How many of you have seen the 1996 A&E version of Emma?
At 1:07 and 2:16 of the video above.

The cast looking dreadfully bored. Almost like an awkward family photo.

But who wasn't taken with the sideways smilin' Frank Churchill?

He was so ding-dong charming.
(This in no way demeans the ever-hot Ewan McGregor)

That smile.

That hair.

But it didn't take too long
before I realized that
I probably was just in love with
Mr. Frank Churchill
because he reminded me
of someone else.

Any Guesses?

II don't think that we will be able to find a picture of Mark Paul Gosselaar in a doublet so we will have to happy with his British doppleganger.

Before you brush me off as a crazy who is in love with an old school, big cellphone carryin', Has-Been
have you seen this recent picture?

I know, I know.
He’s not wearing a doublet.
I digress.
But it was so worth it.

Editors blunder:
I was called out by The Former 786 that there is a period costume episode of Saved by the Bell. I knew that but hadn't been able to find a picture of it the first time I made this post and I liked the picture that I found so much better, that I went the funny (lazy) route. Because I know that my loyal readers turn to this blog for absolute factual journalism, I apologize. Will you accept this as my apology?

Hot Guys in Doublets: Tom LeFroy

This is not our normal "Sharp Dressed Man" video. Since I can NEVER get enough of that video you can see it at the bottom of the post.

This video is to Alanis Morrisettes Uninvited. Not a normal choice for a period piece but it works better than a lot of the other ones that I saw. Plus, the guy I want to talk about isn't in "Sharp Dressed Man"

Who saw Tom Lefroy?

Played by the handsome James McAvoy

in the Better-Than-I-Thought-It-Was-Going-To-Be Becoming Jane
(I'm just a bit of a purist and nervous about them messing with a real person like that)

He was adorable in some of his other roles as well

But it's really all about the doublet, right?

Have you guys seen Becoming Jane? What did you think?
What do you think of James McAvoy?

I have some ideas for the next installment of Hot Guys in Doublets but I'd LOVE to hear about what you guys would like to see. Who are some of your favorites?

And like promised here is the video:
