I'm excited about this film.
I really liked the books.
But I have to ask this question that has been bugging me since they announced the cast.
Did anyone else picture Peeta as a bigger boy?
I kind of always saw him something like this:
More than the skinny kid they cast:
I wonder, if it wasn't written into the story that he was bigger, where did I get that from?
Is it because he lived off bread? LOL!
Or because he was always fed when so many other went hungry.
I always pictured a clear difference in the physique of the well-fed Peeta and the ever-hungry Gale but they weren't cast this way. Oh, our imaginations.
Am I really the only one?
No, you're not the only one. I pictured him bigger too.
ReplyDeleteWell, Katniss does learn that Peeta and his family aren't nearly as well-fed as she thinks. He eats what his family can afford to buy and what bread of theirs goes stale, just like Katniss' family has to make do with what they can afford and what she can spare from hunting.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't picture anyone in District 12, except Haymitch and possibly the likes of the mayor, being particularly well-fed.
I think Peeta is a good fit. I think Gale should have been skinnier, though. He's too buff.
ReplyDeleteI *DID* picture Peeta as bigger. That's how she describes him! Stocky.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I swore that Edward Cullen had black hair. I insisted, until a friend brought out her copy of Twilight and flipped to the page where Bella waxes rhapsodic on his reddish brown locks.
So, I've been wrong. (Though it's quite rare. . . .*cough*)
I pictured everyone just a bit skinnier than they are in the movie. I mean, they're all poverty-stricken, right?
ReplyDeleteIt's not just you. I mean, Josh Hutcherson is stocky enough, but I also pictured Peeta taller. As it is, he seems a bit...stumpy?
ReplyDeleteAnd actually, I think Gale isn't lean enough. Katniss too. They both look too well-fed and healthy.
That's so funny. I never pictured him as a filled out boy. However, I don't remember him having blonde hair. That was a surprise to me when I watched the trailer.
ReplyDeleteI pictured Peeta a bit chunkier than who has been cast, but am still over all happy with how they look! You are definitely not the only one.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the movie!
OK, I thought it was time to actually turn to the text...yes, I should have done this before, but whatever.
ReplyDeleteOn pg 25 when she first introduces Peeta at the reaping she says "Medium height, stocky build, ashy blond hair..."
I'M NOT CRAZY!
(This is one of my daily affirmations, as well)
Huh. I totally missed the "stocky" line. Or maybe I'm just hardwired to picture the romantic hero as skinny? I thought Peeta was about how he is in the movie--though maybe taller. Which, apparently, is another thing I got wrong.
ReplyDeleteAlso, LOVE the family pic at the bottom of your blog. You guys read the coolest books! And you have a red-head! Me, too! :)
Oh my gosh! I'm SOOOO glad you posted this because, yes, Peeta was definitely "stocky" in my mind! Maybe because everyone else in District 12 was starving and he had bread, but he's definitely bigger. I hope the kiddo playing him does a good job and the preview looks FAB, but I'm worried that he looks young. A lot younger than Katniss, anyway.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't picture him that cute either!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Coleen and Jennifer. I see this actor and remember all the parts he played as a kid. He just seems like a kid to me.
ReplyDeleteBut I admit I imagined Peeta as forgettable on the outside which is why when we get to know what he's like on the inside we are so impressed with him. He's a class act. Kinda like the Horatio Hornblower Hot Guys in Doublets, 'he's hot because he's honorable. Honorable is sexy.'
He's our everyman
and they changed him into a leading man.
Yeah, in my mind he was kind of scrawny. I had pictured Gale as taller but thinner than Peeta.
ReplyDeleteYeah, and the girl they cast as Katniss doesn't exactly look like she's starving. But I like Josh Hutcherson anyway, he's a good actor. His performance in Bridge to Terabithia made me cry. And my normally very reserved 18yo is drooling over all the pictures of Peeta she sees now. I'm amused.
ReplyDeleteNow is where I have to admit - despite my rather LONG list of YA reads, that these are not among them.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'll get to it, but I"m waiting for a time when I can take two or three days to read them all.
I know.
I'm lame.
I'm with you, I thought he'd be ... bigger, somehow.
ReplyDeletePeeta was "bigger" because he was strong. He hauled around 100 pounds bags of flour at the family bakery. I don't remember him being tall. Now, Gale I did see as taller but more wiry.
ReplyDeleteI'm Team Peeta all the way. Always have been.
I always thought Haymitch was fat. I pictured him as a portly man with a handlebar mustache, kind of like those lawyers in the south. So imagine my surprise when I found out that no one else in my family thought so. Go figure. Funny how a little paragraph about his pot belly made such a mental impression on me.
