Oh, this might be a case of 'Shelly is always the last to know'.
It happens.
But just in case there are still a few of you out there who haven't seen this
let me introduce you to
THE VOCABGRABBER
OK, this is just a picture of it.
You can play with the real thing at
What does it do?
Copy and paste your entire novel (up to 200,000 characters) into the box and it will analyze your use of vocab, telling you the frequency of words and even offering some alternatives.
I really like the clean visual aspect of it.
This is an example from a blog post I put in.
It is just handy dandy!
What do you think?
Have you seen it before?
Do you have different way to find overused words that you like better?
That is so cool and useful!
ReplyDeleteI would put my manuscript in a word cloud and see what words were overused. Looked seemed to be one.
I like this better!!! Thanks!
I've never heard of this. Very cool :) Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to tell you my sister LOVED the Sharp Dressed Man video :) She called me up demanding to know what each movie was. Then I wasted most of my day trying to figure it out, only to find a list of all the movies in the comments.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty cool! I just hope it doesn't turn out to be like that I-phone thing that corrects words and ends up making you say really inappropriate things to your boss and your mother. :-). To find overused words, I read my work aloud. To find better words, I go to thesaurus.com. This thingy is way more cool.
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting! Thanks for telling about this. I'll check soon! (-:
ReplyDeleteI would not want anybody...or anything...messing with my words!! Leave my unconventional 'vocab' alone!! LOL
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat! I haven't seen this, so thanks for the introduction. I'm going to go play with it now. :D
ReplyDeletei'm laughin at angie =D
ReplyDeleteand scary thought to put my ms into numbers!
Ooh! Well _I_ certainly didn't know about this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the Visual Thesaurus before because I get almost daily emails from wordsmith.org and they always have a link to VT in their posts.
ReplyDeleteBut I'd never seen this particular application. It's really funny what words come up as used a lot. Like coconut! =D
You were clearly not the last to know.
ReplyDeleteI was!
Thanks!
OMG! It turns out I totally overuse "feces." Thank goodness for your magic word computer!
ReplyDelete@Angie- I was trying to figure them out the first time I saw it when I found them in the comments as well :) Great minds think alike...errr...something like that.
ReplyDelete@SMandL- I was a little surprised to see that you were commenting on this post and then I read your comment and I am no longer surprised. LOL!
My dear, you are not the last one to know...I am! That's so cool! Thank you...off to play with it now. ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay, now that is cool! You're definitely not the LAST to know, I can tell you.
ReplyDeleteI had never seen this.
ReplyDeleteBut when I did
It was love.
I heard about it a while ago but have never used it. I mostly use a thesaurus software installed on my computer. I guess I need to give it a try. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOoooh, that actually looks really, really, REALLY helpful! Off to try it now... ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou are NOT the last to know! Apparently I am the last to know. *sigh* I'm always the last to know. This is FABULOOOOUS! I need to go try it. So glad you shared this. *gold star for shelly!*
ReplyDeleteI'm a little afraid to see what words I overuse... but what a fun tool! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks Shelly. You weren't the last to know!
ReplyDeleteNope I think I'm the last one to know. Looks very useful. I popped in a troublesome picture book manuscript. Interesting results.
