I'm a Kurious Kid

 I just adore Abby Fowers
If you don't follow her, you should.
I'm playing along in her blogfest called

One of my favorite books as a kid was
The Story of Zachary Zween

"Albert Ames went first each day, / Because his name began with A. / For A to Z, that was the rule / Of this particular London school....And who came last? / Poor Zachary Zween-- / So envious that his face turned green! / Yes, Zachary Zween got most upset / And angry at the alphabet."

But as a parent, I LOVE picture books.
I think one of my favorites being a book called
Jamberry

"One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry."

I have this one entirely memorized and it a MUST-read-aloud kind of book.
For some reason I always read it like a jazz singer diggin' that syncopation.
I can't help myself.
This book is filled with words you want to wrap your mouth around.
My hats off to you, Mr. Degen.
I am absolutely in love with this book.

I already shared with you my love for the Madeline books.

And I should probably give a shout out to Sandra Boynton

Which begs the question,
Why do I love rhyme and meter so much?
What is it about these books that makes me want
to read them over and over again?
I have no answer.
Do you guys know?

  1. I think it's the melody in the words. A well written rhyme sounds so beautiful when read aloud, however nonsensical the words may be.

  2. I love the flow of words in some books. It makes them so fun to read. For my kids I loved the Serendipity books because the language was so beautiful. They were the kinds of picture books that a parent needed to read to the children because the language was too advanced for early reader to read themselves, but I was able to expose my kids to some great language (and fun stories besides).

  3. rhyming is similar to singing
melodious words strung together in harmony
    it's all uplifting =)
    to me too!

  4. Oh, I'm still a very big fan of picture books. I had the pleasure of owning some reads as a little kid whose illustrations were truly a feast for the eyes as the author's words were a feast for the ears. Speaking of which, I think that's why you like rhyme and meter so much - the really good ones are like chocolate that you can hear rather than eat!

  5. I loved the Boynton books and so did my kids. They're like a jumping off point into Seuss and Silverstein and Gary Larson's Far Side comics.

  6. I'm a Campaigner and a new follower stopping by to say Hi! I love the Madeline books but not familiar with these others -- but I will pick them up for sure for my kids. These are definitely the kinds I like reading outloud the best - I love how you put it: "words you want to wrap your mouth around"

  7. YAY Shelley! I am sad I am just getting to see this! I have been gone all morning helping my husband on the farm! (for real). I have never read Zachary Zween, but I think I need to find it just from what you shared. So fun! I also love Jamberry and obviously Sandra Boynton! LOL. Madeline books will always be great. She is such a fun character. I am like you tho - I love rhyme and meter! It's my favorite! So glad you're doing the Kids-Fest! :) YOU ROCK!

  10. Poetry feels like dancing. There's a sway to the ideas as they rock back and forth.

  11. JAMBERRY!!! Omg, I totally forgot about that book, but it was one of my favorites when I was a kid.

I loved Madeline, too, especially the cartoons that they would show on the Disney channel. The Babar books were another favorite of mine, and I used to love Shel Silverstein poetry and Dr. Seuss. It amazes me now, how Dr. Seuss was able to weave some really intense topics into his work, and yet make them seem so cute and colorful and silly.

  12. Hi Shelly! How are ya doing? I'm so glad to be back hanging out at your wonderful blog. I've been quite crazy for the last while - yeah, yeah, I know, I'm always crazy - a lot of us writers are - but I was even crazier than normal.

Okay, enough of that - I lOVE, LOVE, LOVE picture books! They are SO not just for kids! One of my very, very favorites is TWO COOL COWS by Toby Speed! Oh my word that book is a blast to read!
