Blog is an Ugly Word

Blog is an ugly word (I'm sorry coiner, it just is.)
And it doesn't get better if you move around the letters (glob, lobg, lgob.) It is still ugly.
It sounds like something you should dislodge from your nose.

I don't mean to be rude but you have a blog.

I'm not the only one who thinks that blog is an ugly word. The Editor-in-Chief of Vogue told her magazine writers to come up with an alternative word. She finds blog "vulgar."

I don't want to call this a blog any more. I want to call it something much more beautiful...

So I looked up what other people thought were beautiful words.

Do you know what is considered by some experts as the most beautiful words in the English language?

Wait for it...

Cellar Door

CELLAR DOOR!

I don't get it.
Here is the LINK in case you think I'm making this up.

But I wasn't the only one who didn't get it. There are 577 comments on this article of people who didn't get it either and decided to share their own beautiful words.

Words like

Voluptuous

Celery

Twelve

Aquamarine

Garage

Ambrosia

Ragamuffin

Though these words are great they will not serve my purpose in changing the word blog into something more beautiful.

Welcome to my aquamarine, please feel free to leave a comment

I'm thinking that changing it to just another pretty word, won't serve my purposes. I probably need something practical.

Did I just say practical?

Well, you know me better than that. :)

Any suggestions?

Blurb is an ugly word, too! Oh, what's a girl to do?

  1. Being a Poet, I like the idea of referring to my blog as my "Happy Word Space". Kinda catchy, don't you think?! ^_^

  6. I LOVE the word Ragamuffin! Ha ha ha ha!! I always call my kids that. ;) And I don't think celery is a beautiful word. Probably because I don't like it?
I don't know what word you could use rather than blog. :P
    Funny post! :)

  12. LOL. You're right. Blog is kind of a blargh word. Haha. I do like blurb though. I feel like the sound of it relates well to the definition.

I have no suggestions for your, but I am very surprised by "cellar door." Beautiful, really?

  14. I think cellar door is a gorgeous sounding word.
My favorite word in the whole world is "Langosta."
It's the spanish word for lobster.

I always say it like I've just won the lottery or something. You have to say it smiling. "Langosta!" Yeah. It is just that awesome.

  15. Ha. French words always sound more chic. How do you say blog in French? Le Blog. La Blog. Les Blogges? No, that doesnt work either:).

  16. I agree the word blog has very little inherent beauty and I wish we had a better word for it. On the other hand (at the risk of sounding gross) there is a word I've always felt was in the opposite position. It sounds beautiful but it's meaning is disgusting: diarrhea.

I'm not saying we should call blogs diarrhea or anything...then again, have you seen some of the stuff out there? Just sayin'

  17. Blog came from Web Log. I guess "Web Log" just took too long to deal with, so by the time I wanted to have a web log, the term became blog.

If I lived in Tornado Alley, I'd love cellar door too.

  18. Oh my word! What is going on here?! How did you read the contents of the exasperated portion of my mind? How? Or is this a case of Great Minds Think Alike?! I have been telling everyone who will listen that Blog is a stupid word. Idiotic, blobby, globby. It makes me think of Jabba the Hut, who I insanely detest by the way. (It's one of my life's missions to detest him.)
You know what I've been wanting to do? Start a petition, send it around the blogging world like wildfire, and banish the name Blog for a shiny new one.
Fantastic post. Bravo for exposing the ugly truth!

  19. Since blog = web log, maybe you could go with: Perost (Personal Post), Intery (Internet Diary), or Virtess (Virtual Address).

  20. I remember seeing the word "blog" once and trying to figure out what it was supposed to mean. When my dad (yes, my dad) finally explained to me that it was a shortening of "web log," I still didn't like it. I supposed they could have shortened it to "weblo," but then they might have had some legal issues from the Boy Scouts of America.

Blog. *shudder* It's too close to "blob" and "bog," in my opinion.

Sidenote: My next child will be named Cellar Door.

  21. Interesting post. I enjoy your writing style. "buoy" is my favorite word, "blog" not so much. Don't ask why, it just is.

  22. This made me laugh out loud :) I'm drawing a blank for ideas, but you're right. We definitely need a new name for these things called blogs. It's so weird to say to people to (in person, or in written form): I write a blog. Or I've started blogging. They kind of look at you like "Whaaaa?" and you're like, "Yeah...anyway..."
